For Ruth, teaching was not just a profession; it was a proud family tradition. Born into a lineage of educators, she frequently noted that her mother had been a teacher, and her daughter carried on the mantle as a teacher as well.
Though she spent the final decade of her career as a vital pillar of the Delran High School Special Education department, Ruth’s instructional path spanned multiple areas of expertise. She originally spent 15 years teaching Home Economics, inspiring creativity and practical life skills in her students.
A Calling Born from Personal Experience
Ruth’s transition into Special Education was driven by a deeply personal calling. As a mother raising a child with a learning disability, she gained firsthand insight into the unique academic, emotional, and social hurdles that exceptional children navigate daily.
Driven by an unconditional desire to empower students like her own son, she bravely returned to the classroom herself to earn her Special Education certification. She brought that lived experience, alongside boundless patience, directly into Delran High School, where she adjusted general curricula and authored crucial Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each child’s specific learning style.
A Champion for Both Students and Colleagues
Ruth firmly believed that an educator must never stop growing. Thirty years after completing her initial degrees, she challenged herself to step out of her comfort zone and enter the Master’s in Educational Leadership program at William Paterson University.

Her students found great joy and inspiration in watching their own teacher study for exams and write papers, which Ruth intentionally used as a living example of lifelong learning. Armed with her advanced degree, she hoped to one day transition into a Special Education Supervisor role, where she could use reflective coaching and collaborative team-building to help other educators reach their full potential.
Her leadership extended past the classroom walls to her peers. As an active D.E.A. Representative, Ruth spent countless hours attending educational conferences and labor workshops, learning how to best advocate for her fellow faculty members and strengthen the organizational framework of the school district.
A Deeply Missed Friend and Family Pillar
Beyond her pedagogical achievements and organizational skills, Ruth will be remembered for the pure warmth she radiated every day. She approached her world with an infectious sense of humor, a quick wit, and an open heart that made her a beloved confidante in the staff lounge and a safe haven for vulnerable students.
The D.E.A. highlighted this deep bond, stating:
“Her Delran Family will miss Mrs. Feldman’s friendship, her sense of humor, and her willingness to always lend a hand whenever needed. Our deepest condolences go to her loving husband Gary, her children, grandchildren, and her many friends.”
Ruth Feldman lived her life as a beacon of encouragement, showing her community that with enough compassion, every single child has the capacity to be successful. While her classroom stands quiet, the confidence she instilled in her students and the strength she gave to her colleagues will endure for generations to come. May she rest in eternal peace.
